Nordic IPTV: Watching Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and Finnish TV Online

By the Sphere IPTV team · Updated

Nordic IPTV means Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or Finnish TV delivered over the internet. Each country's public broadcaster streams its channels in its own app (NRK TV, SVT Play, DRTV, Yle Areena), and distributors such as Allente, Telia and Altibox sell full channel packages over broadband. Sports and premium channels are licensed country by country, so a service that works in one Nordic country may not cover another. Norway already prohibits streaming obviously illegal content, and Sweden has debated fines for viewers.

How Nordic TV reaches viewers

Across the Nordic countries, traditional cable and satellite have largely given way to TV delivered over broadband. Three layers make up the market:

  • Public broadcasters stream their own channels live and on demand, usually free to residents.
  • Commercial broadcasters such as TV 2 in Norway and Denmark or TV4 in Sweden run their own streaming services, with premium tiers for sport.
  • Distributors — broadband and TV companies — bundle many channels into packages delivered to a set-top box or app. This is IPTV in the technical sense.

IPTV in Norway

For Norway IPTV, start with NRK TV, which streams NRK's channels live and offers a large on-demand library. TV 2 Play carries TV 2's channels, with premium tiers that add sport. Distributors such as Allente, Altibox, Telia and RiksTV sell full channel packages delivered over broadband.

Norway's rules are explicit. The government's “Velg ekte” information service — run by the Norwegian Industrial Property Office, the Ministry of Culture and Equality and Norwegian Customs — states that the Copyright Act prohibits streaming content that has obviously been made available illegally, even for private viewing at home, and that breaches can be punished by fines or up to one year in prison. Norwegian readers will find more detail in our IPTV Norge guide, written in Norwegian.

IPTV in Sweden

SVT Play and TV4 Play cover most Swedish free and commercial channels, while Tele2, Telia and Allente sell packages. In 2025 a government inquiry (SOU 2025:100) proposed making it explicitly punishable for private individuals to use illegal IPTV services, with fines as the normal penalty. SVT reported on 30 June 2026 that the change would not take effect on 1 July as planned because the governing parties disagreed. Check the current status before relying on any summary — our Swedish guide IPTV Sverige covers it in more detail.

Denmark and Finland

In Denmark, DR streams its channels in DRTV, and TV 2 — a Danish broadcaster that is separate from Norway's TV 2 despite the shared name — runs its own TV 2 Play service. Distributors such as YouSee and Allente sell wider packages. Danish searches often use “IPTV Danmark”; the same principles apply.

In Finland, Yle streams its channels and archive in Yle Areena, including Swedish-language programming for Finland's Swedish-speaking population. MTV Katsomo covers MTV's channels, and operators such as Elisa and Telia sell channel packages. If you need Finnish or Swedish audio, check which tracks a service carries rather than assuming every channel offers both.

Why rights matter more than the app

Nordic football, ice hockey, winter sports and premium series are sold country by country, often to different companies. A Norwegian sports package won't necessarily include the same competitions as the Swedish one, even from the same distributor. When comparing services, check the specific competitions and channels for your country rather than the headline channel count.

Nordic channels usually subtitle foreign programmes rather than dubbing them, so check that your player shows subtitle tracks correctly.

Watching Nordic TV from abroad

Public broadcasters geo-restrict much of their live output, especially sport and acquired films. Within the EU, Regulation (EU) 2017/1128 requires paid online content services to work when subscribers are temporarily in another member state; Sweden, Denmark and Finland are EU members, while Norway is not, so Norwegian services set their own travel rules. If you live abroad permanently, look for services licensed where you live.

What to check before paying for Nordic IPTV

  1. Is the service licensed to show these channels in your country of residence?
  2. Does its published channel list include the exact channels and competitions you want?
  3. Does the programme guide show the correct Nordic times in your time zone?
  4. Are subtitles and alternative audio tracks supported in your player?
  5. Can you test it first, and what are the renewal and refund terms?

Frequently asked questions

Is IPTV legal in Norway?

IPTV technology is legal and widely used by Norwegian distributors. Streaming content that has obviously been made available illegally is prohibited under Norwegian copyright law, according to the government's Velg ekte service.

Can I watch NRK or SVT outside the Nordic countries?

Some programmes are available internationally, but much live output — especially sport and films — is geo-restricted for licensing reasons.

Is there one service with all Nordic channels?

Pan-Nordic distributors operate in several countries, but each country has its own packages and rights. No single legal service carries every channel and competition across all four countries.

Will Swedish viewers of illegal IPTV be fined?

A 2025 inquiry proposed fines for private users. SVT reported in June 2026 that the change would not take effect on 1 July 2026; check the Riksdag's current status for updates.
